Sometimes I get something like a glimpse of the Spiritual world, of Spiritual Truth--though to even call it a "glimpse" is giving the vision too much optical credit. For it is hardly seen at all but seems to be apprehended as with almost a wholly different kind of sense besides, ie., seeing or hearing.
"For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I will know fully, as I am fully known. " --1 Cor. 13:12
Apostle Paul here is trying to convey just how dimly we comprehend or see Spiritual things in our present, fallen state . . . compared to how much more clearly and directly we will be able to see in our completed, perfected condition.
This is not talking about looking through, ie., a window glass that is darkened . . . but instead looking at a reflection in a mirror--that is the kind of "glass" meant. In ancient times mirrors were made usually from polished metal, rubbed with pumice stone. In Corinth, where Paul was addressing the church, they were noted for producing certain mirrors of a polished brass kind, some of the best of such a kind, thus Paul was giving practical context with his allusion.
But, unlike our mirrors today, the image seen in the polished brass was but a dim, distorted reflection comparatively. And when he uses the term "darkly" . . . from the original Greek more means as "an enigma" or "riddle" or "dark saying" . . . where the meaning is not instantly clear, but shrouded.
Our relationship to God, and understanding of the Spirit and Spiritual Truth now is like to looking into a dim, distorted reflection which is peculiar, mysterious, puzzling . . . compared to when we are at last glorified and we will see the Lord--not via some distorted, corrupt reflection, but "face to face", without a veil, without obscurity, with no intervening medium!
I dare say sometimes, my perception (I am assuming "spiritual eyes") skirts and presses the edge of that "glass darkly" . . . and a "glimpse" of sorts is had of the "other side". At such times I am always struck at how far away "It" is--how different and "other" . . . the pure world and truth and person of Spirit is . . . compared to this world and life we are in now. For the most part we have just the faintest, barest, slightest inkling . . . of how deeply enmeshed and entranced and embedded we are in the fallen world of sin, living and thinking and acting in a paradigm that evil has wrought to such a degree . . . that it is "the water we swim in" . . . and, while we often think we are comprehending Spiritual Truths and acting in good and righteous ways occasionally (modestly conceived) . . . in fact, we are not even close, in reality! Thank God for grace! Thank God for His mercy . . . and that the race is already won, the contest finished! And that, once saved, regardless of our present ignorance and delusion (which is far more profound than we even begin to realize compared to the coming glorified Spiritual Reality) our place is secured . . . until we get There.
Meanwhile, we continue to bumble and stumble and mostly talk nonsense, though thinking ourselves wise--and it will be embarrassing when we get There to See how lacking we truly were--as we while away the hours . . . until our release. . . .
[I have more to say on this . . . please pray for me in getting to it here and asap . . . . . . You might be surprised the "forces" and obstacles that are constantly put before me to just come here and write and do my little part for the glory of God...... The Enemy is constantly seeking to thwart any who love God, from the smallest to the grandest of efforts in that divine cause........]
