Something I observe. . . .
Better is walking with truth in the desert . . . than dancing in falsity on a cliff. . . .
This is not always the case but seems to be general happening; that is, that when you are first saved, there is a wave of grace. The Spirit sends an emotional blast and an excitement at having found/been found by--the Truth. I think He does this for the "babe in Christ" to give us encouragement and energy in the beginning of our new walk, and He holds the demonic attacks at bay . . . for a season.
There is a season of joy, exuberance and faith . . . which lasts for a while. . . .
But then, as you begin to mature (in Christ) the Spirit seems to recede and it seems that you are left on your own . . . to trudge in advancing.
What too often happens, is that people get discouraged and start to question, doubt . . . and begin casting about for a "new" experience. Here is where it gets dangerous, for there is a temptation to latch onto some novel, fanciful "new" interpretation. . . . This is where it is easy to end up following some new "teacher" or guru who again provides that "pop"--excitement and "spiritual experience".
But what should happen (and I dare say DOES happen) to the genuinely saved Believer . . . is a steady, grounded regeneration of the MIND and intellect, in searching out and grappling with correct doctrine. You get into the Word and the mind starts into a process where, little by little, falsities and misguided notions begin to be winnowed out and away.
An emotional experience which is not grounded and guided by correct "intellectual" principles tends to go off the rails, and is susceptible to being hijacked "mystical" forces and false teaching.
But this can be a somewhat "dry" experience--a "desert walk"--where the soul beings to doubt because it FEELS as if the Spirit has left.
However, He hasn't left, but is watching and leading you just from a "higher" actually SPIRITUAL place, which is beyond mere emotionalism and sentimentality.
Your MIND is becoming regenerated. The HEART will follow. It is dangerous (albeit strongly tempting) to reverse that order and the Enemy will be constantly trying to do just that in prompting you to be discouraged, and many take the bait . . . run from the desert . . . and go to join others dancing in some novel ecstasy . . . on a cliff.
The Adversary employs various "pied pipers" who will encourage you abandon your "dry" walk, and they will harangue and deceive you into viewing the seemingly lonely walk of maturity--that it is too "legalistic" . . . too "doctrinal" . . . too "patriarchal", "authoritarian" or some other pejorative . . . enticing you instead to something more "free", "new", "heartfelt". . . .
Emotion and sentimentality have their places, but "repentance" is a CHANGE OF THE MIND--and that is where the Spirit commences the WORK of regeneration, sanctification. The new "heart of flesh" is then able to react appropriately to Truth . . . as He (Truth) is taking possession of your being, your "temple". . . .
Compared to the incredible gift and grace we are given . . . exercising some mature patience, steadfastness, longsuffering--during the somewhat lonely, desert walk seasons--should be the least we can do! All the while continuing to express our gratitude, HAPPY to carry our cross for as long as He sees fit; where He knows exactly and lovingly just what we can bear and what is best for our ongoing ACTUAL spiritual growth. . . .
Better the desert walk in truth . . . than dancing in falsity on a cliff. . . .
God bless :)
